چکیده

Flows over time provide a natural and convenient description for the dynamics of a continuous stream of particles traveling from a source to a sink in a network, allowing to track the progress of each infinitesimal particle along time. A basic model for the propagation of flow is the so-called fluid queue model in which the time to traverse an edge is composed of a flow-dependent waiting time in a queue at the entrance of the edge plus a constant travel time after leaving the queue. In a dynamic network routing game each infinitesimal particle is interpreted as a player that seeks to complete its journey in the least possible time. Players are forward looking and anticipate the congestion and queuing delays induced by others upon arrival to any edge in the network. Equilibrium occurs when each particle travels along a shortest path. This paper is concerned with the study of equilibria in the fluid queue model and provides a constructive proof of existence and uniqueness of equilibria in single origin-destination networks with piecewise constant inflow rate. This is done through a detailed analysis of the underlying static flows obtained as derivatives of a dynamic equilibrium. Furthermore, for multicommodity networks, we give a general nonconstructive proof of existence of equilibria when the inflow rates belong to L.

Robust Fluid Control of Multiclass Queueing Networks

This thesis applies recent advances in the field of robust optimization to the optimal control of multiclass queueing networks. We develop models that take into account the uncertainty of interarrival and service time in multiclass queueing network problems without assuming a specific probability distribution, while remaining highly tractable and providing insight into the corresponding optimal...

Stabilizing Queueing Networks with Setups

For multiclass queueing networks, dispatch policies govern the assignment of servers to the jobs they process. Production policies perform the analogous task for queueing networks whose servers are subject to switch-over delays or setups, a model we refer to as setup networks. It is well known that a poorly chosen dispatch policy may lead to instability of a multiclass queueing network, even wh...

Stability in Queueing Networks via the Finite Decomposition Property

Determination of the stability behavior of a queueing network is an important part of analyzing such systems. In Gamarnik and Hasenbein (2005) it is shown if a fluid network has the finite decomposition property (FDP) and is not weakly stable, then any queueing network associated with the fluid network is not rate stable. In that paper the FDP was demonstrated for two station queueing networks ...

Performance evaluation of scheduling control of queueing networks: Fluid model heuristics

Motivated by dynamic scheduling control for queueing networks, Chen and Yao 8] developed a systematic method to generate dynamic scheduling control policies for a uid network, a simple and highly aggregated model that approximates the queueing network. This study addresses the question of how good these uid policies are as heuristic scheduling policies for queueing networks. Using simulation on...

Gaussian skewness approximation for dynamic rate multi-server queues with abandonment

The multi-server queue with non-homogeneous Poisson arrivals and customer abandonment is a fundamental dynamic rate queueing model for large scale service systems such as call centers and hospitals. Scaling the arrival rates and number of servers arises naturally when a manager updates a staffing schedule in response to a forecast of increased customer demand. Mathematically, this type of scali...
